Lehman and Belady wrote the first book about software evolution in 1985. That work initiated a fertile research field, which is today a hot topic in software engineering (for example, it is one of the ten most important topics to teach in a software engineering course according to a report of the IEEE).
The book has been scanned by the people of ERCIM Working group on Software Evolution, and it is available in this page.
It is a must-read, and you should keep a copy in your computer, because it is currently out of print, and little libraries have a copy.
